Swaziland's acting Ludzidzini Governor, Timothy Velabo Mtetwa, has announced that the date of the upcoming Incwala (aka. First Fruits) public holiday would be Tuesday, December 13, 2011.
Last week (01-Dec-2011), Swaziland's Minister of Home Affairs, Chief Mgwagwa Gamedze, had announced that the date of the upcoming Incwala (aka. First Fruits) public holiday would soon be announced, at which time we had already forecast that the date of the upcoming Incwala (aka. First Fruits) public holiday would be Tuesday, December 13, 2011.
Due to the complex nature of the rule used to specify the date of the Incwala main day, and its related public holiday, the Incwala public holiday sometimes occurs twice in a year, as was the case last year (21-Dec-2010 and 02-Jan-2010) and four years ago (26-Dec-2007, and 04-Jan-2007). On the other hand some years it does not occur at all, as was the case in 2006 and 2009.
In a separate announcement, Swaziland's Home Affairs Minister, Prince Gcokoma, announced that a day in lieu public holiday would not be given to compensate the fact that the upcoming Christmas Day falls on a Sunday, "because the subsequent day is also a holiday".
The Home Affairs Minister did, however, confirm that Monday, January 2, 2012, would be a non-working public holiday in Swaziland ("empeleni siyawuligagabula nge msombuluko").
