Tajikistan Gazettes Public Holidays Amendments

The President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, has signed into law the bill "On public holidays".

The current amendments are but the latest bout in President Rahmon's decade-long crusade to make Tajikistan more secular, by reconsidering the "socially-divisive celebrations which have a negative impact on the people's living standards" (09-Jul-1999).

The Tajik Law on Public Holidays, was last amended in 2009 when a November 24 Flag Day holiday was added (12-Nov-2009), and before that in 2005 when 3 working day public holidays were declared, namely: The Day of the Tajik Language (July 22), Mehrgon (Harvest holiday), and Sada (30-Dec-2005).
