Turkmenistan's President, Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov, has signed a decree declaring Monday, January 2, 2012, as a one-off non-working public holiday in connection with the upcoming celebration of the Western New Year in Turkmenistan.
As per the aforementioned announcement, the document was signed at today's meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers "with the view of creating favorable conditions for the New Year celebration and holiday of the population of our country, and in accordance with paragraph 3 of Article 81 of the Labour Code of Turkmenistan".
Normally, in Turkmenistan, public holidays that fall on a Sunday are not compensated by declaring a public holiday on the next working day.
However, as mentioned above, paragraph 3 of Article 81 of the Labour Code of Turkmenistan does give the President the discretionary powers to do so on a case-by-case basis, something that President Berdimuhammadov has done on occasion in the past (10-Dec-2010, 19-Mar-2010 and 10-Nov-2009).
