The Deputy Kazakh Minister of Finance, Sergei Gromov, has announced that the Majlis (Kazakhstan's parliament) had finalized the pending legislation to declare May 7 as a new annual public holiday in Kazakhstan to be named Homeland Defender Day, beginning in 2013.

Last spring (04-May-2012), the president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, has instructed the government to draft and submit a bill ("On amendments to the Law of Kazakhstan") that would make May 7 a non-working public holiday to be called the "Defender of the Motherland Day", to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the armed forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan, although at the time, it was not clear if this was to be a new annual non-working public holiday, or just a one-off public holiday.
