Madagascar's Conseil de Gouvernement, at the insistence of the Minister of communications, has issued the "Décret fixant la liste des jours fériés, chômés et payés au titre de l'année 2012", which officially declares the list of public holidays in Madagascar for the calendar year 2012.

As per custom (15-Jan-2011, 20-Jan-2010, 13-Jan-2009 and 16-Jan-2008), the aforementioned list of 2011 Madagascar public holidays, is based upon the recommendation of Madagascar's Ministère de la Fonction publique, du Travail et des Lois sociales.

For the second year, December 11, which was declared a new annual public holidays at the end of 2010 (10-Dec-2010), is officialized as an annual non-working public holiday (journée fériée, chômée et payée) to commemorate the anniversary of the fourth republic (jour d’anniversaire de la promulgation de la Quatrième République).

For the third year in a row, the list of Madagascar official public holidays does not include, or even refer to, any one-off bridge public holiday, contrary to what was done in the 3 preceding years (13-Jan-2009, 16-Jan-2008 and 09-Jan-2007) and in particular with respect to the day after the Ascension public holiday (01-Jun-2011).

Interestingly, for the first year, based on early drafts of the decree being circulated, it would seem that the March 8, Women's Day, public holiday is no longer restricted to women employees.
