The Office of the President of the Maldives has released a communique indicating that Wednesday and Thursday, August 22 and 23, 2012, had been declared as non-working public holidays to link the upcoming Eid ul-Fitr (End of Ramadan) public holidays with the subsequent weekend.
Earlier this year (06-Jan-2012) the 2012 Eid ul-Fitr (End of Ramadan) public holidays in the Maldives had been announced as Sunday, August 19, for both the private and public sectors, and Monday and Tuesday, August 20 and 21, 2012, for the Maldives public sector.
The aforementioned announcement is slightly confusing as to whether these 2 extra public holidays will apply to both the private and public sectors or to just the public sector.
As per the text of the presidential communique, "Wednesday the 22nd of August 2012, and Thursday the 23rd of August, has been declared as public holidays", leading one to think that these 2 extra days of public holidays apply to both the private and public sectors.
However, the communique goes on to state that "Instead, [Saturday] the 1st and [Saturday the] 15th of September 2012, will be working days for Government offices.", leading one to think that these 2 extra days of public holidays apply only to the public sector of the Maldives. This impression is further reinforced when one reads that "In a Directive issued by the President’s Office today, it was announced that the 22nd and 23rd of August was confirmed as public holidays to extend the weekend to link-up with the Eid holidays.", as such a link-up only concerns the public sector which has public holidays on August 20 and 21 already.
