The Office of the President of the Maldives has released a communique confirming that Saturday, September 15, 2012, would be a regular working day, in compensation for last month's declaration of August 22 and 23 declaration as non-working public holidays to link the Eid ul-Fitr (End of Ramadan) public holidays with the nearby weekend.
Last month (12-Sep-2012), Wednesday and Thursday, August 22 and 23, 2012, had been declared as non-working public holidays to link the upcoming Eid ul-Fitr (End of Ramadan) public holidays with the subsequent weekend.
That August communique went on to state that "Instead, [Saturday] the 1st and [Saturday the] 15th of September 2012, will be working days for Government offices.", leading one to think that these 2 extra days of public holidays apply only to the public sector of the Maldives.
One can only surmise from the above that some public servants forgot to come to work on Saturday, September 1, 2012, prompting the Maldives' goverment to issue today's reminder.
