Thai Government Spokeswoman, Thitima Chaisang, has announced that Thailand’s Government Cabinet had agreed to declare Monday, January 23, 2012, the date of the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year, as a regional public holiday in Southern Thailand.

As per the aforementioned announcement, Monday, January 23, 2012, will be a non-working public holiday in Thailand's southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Satun and Yala, which already enjoy a regional public holiday for Eidilfitri (End of Ramadan).

The declaration of Monday, January 23, 2012, the date of the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year, as a regional public holiday in Southern Thailand. had been proposed by the Thai Minister of the Interior, Yongyuth Wichaidit, and it is not clear from the government statement if this will be a yearly event, although we expet it to be as the Eidilfitri Muslim public holiday in the same 4 provinces is now an annual public holiday.
