Australian ACT Reconciliation Day Public Holiday In 2018

The Government of the ACT (Australia's Capital Territory), through its Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Chris Bourke, has confirmed that there will be a new annual Reconciliation Day non-working public holiday in Australia's ACT (Australia's Capital Territory), beginning in 2018.

Recall that, earlier this year (08-Jun-2016), the Government of the ACT (Australia's Capital Territory) launched public consultations on the possibility of declaring a new annual non-working public holiday in the ACT, beginning in 2017, and which would replace one of the current annual non-working public holidays of Australia's ACT; either Family and Community Day, in September, or the Queen's Birthday, non-working public holiday of Australia's ACT in June.

That aforementioned new annual non-working public holiday in the ACT, would tentatively be called "Reconciliation Day", and would celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum whose result led to amendments to the Australian constitution to include Aboriginal people in the census and make them subject to Commonwealth law, although, at this stage the ACT Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Chris Bourke, has stated that the actual public holiday would not come until 2018 ("Following the commemorations we will undertake in 2017, the ACT Government will establish a Reconciliation Day from 2018.").

According to local media sources, this annual non-working public holiday in the ACT, would occur on a date differing from that of the public holiday it replaced, possibly the first Monday after May 27, the anniversary date of the 1967 referendum, and would in all likelihood replace the Family and Community Day non-working public holiday of Australia's ACT (30-Jul-2007), as the other possibility, it replacing the annual Queen's Birthday, non-working public holiday of Australia's ACT, might re-ignite the pro and con monarchy debate needlessly.

As the aforementioned "Reconciliation Day" public holiday will not come to pass before 2018, it will leave unchanged the previously-announced list of 2017 public holidays in Australia's ACT (07-Dec-2015).
