Australian Victoria AFL Public Holiday Faces The Ax

The Opposition Leader of Australia's State of Victoria, Matthew Guy, is reported as stating that, were he to lead the next Government of Australia's State of Victoria, the still controversial "Friday before the AFL Grand Final" recently-added annual non-working public holiday observed in Australia's State of Victoria, could be canceled ("not something his team was looking at keeping") and, were it to be replaced, it would be replaced by a new annual non-working public holiday "that encompasses all Victorians".

Five years ago (17-Jul-2011), Daniel Andrews, who was then leader of the opposition of Australia's State of Victoria had announced that he would support the push for an extra public holiday to celebrate AFL Grand Final week, if he became premier, a promise he kept as the Premier-elect of the State Government of Australia's State of Victoria, shortly after his election (01-Dec-2014 08-Jul-2015), by the publication of the declaration this new non-working public holiday in Australia's State of Victoria in the Government Gazette (as opposed to a possibly lengthy parliamentary debate).

The amended the list of official non-working public holidays in Australia's State of Victoria for the period of 2016 and 2017, was initially released by the State Government of Australia's State of Victoria (22-Oct-2015 and 17-Mar-2014), with "Date TBC" for the 2016 and 2017 AFL Grand Finale public holiday, and later with the date of September 30, 2016, added officially (07-Nov-2015).

The date of the 2017 "Friday before the AFL Grand Final" public holiday in Australia's State of Victoria was only recently confirmed (10-Sep-2016), though earlier this year (28-Feb-2016), the State Government of Australia's State of Victoria, through its Small Business, Innovation And Trade Minister, Philip Dalidakis, had announced that the "Friday before the AFL Grand Final" new annual non-working public holiday was "here to stay" as a non-working public holiday in Australia's State of Victoria, with the government guaranteeing the long weekend would return in 2017.
