Nicaragua's Coordinadora del Consejo de Comunicación y Ciudadanía has announced that Wednesday and Thursday, September 14-15, 2016, would be non-working public holiday (feriados nacionales obligatorios) in Nicaragua to mark the annual non-working public holidays commemorating the Battle of San Jacinto and Nicaragua's Independence Day public holiday.
The aforementioned announcement goes on to state that, as Friday, September 16, is surrounded by the 2 aforementioned public holidays of Nicaragua and the following weekend, Friday, September 16, 2016, is declared as a one-off non-working public holiday in Nicaragua for the national and municipal public sectors "Ya sabemos vacaciones 14 y 15, y luego también como el viernes está ahí antes del fin de semana, como decimos nosotros está encajonado, entonces va a ser asueto a cuenta de vacaciones a nivel nacional, municipal también".
Three years ago (14-Sep-2013), Nicaragua's Minister of Labour, Alba Luz Briones, invoked Article 68 of the Nicaraguan Labour Code which states that holidays that fall on Sundays are either financially compensated, or an alternative date is given, to declare Monday, September 16, 2013, as a non-working public holiday in Nicaragua to compensate the annual Independence Day public holiday falling on a Sunday.
