Kuwaiti Mulls Western New Year Public Holiday Cancellation

A Kuwaiti National Assembly MP, Abdullah Fahad, has submitted a bill that would cancel the annual Western New Year public holiday, among others, in Kuwait.

In the past, though this is not the case this year, one-off western New Year public holidays were often declared by the Kuwaiti Civil Service Commission whenever January 1st occurred near (22-Dec-2011) or during (24-Dec-2015, 26-Nov-2010 and 17-Dec-2009) the Kuwaiti weekend (04-Aug-2007), though not always systematically (19-Dec-2013 and 08-Dec-2013).

Abdullah Fahad also proposes the cancellation of the public holidays marking the Prophet’s Birthday (29-Nov-2016), the Israa and Ma’araj (12-Apr-2017), and the advent of the Islamic Year (08-Oct-2015).
