Latvia Announces 2026 Public Holidays The Welfare Ministry of the Government of Latvia (Riga) The Ministry of Welfare of the government of Latvia has announced a proposal to move 2 working days in 2026 and hence declare Friday, January 2, 2026, and Monday, June 22, 2026, as one-off bridge public holidays. As per the aforementioned announcement, in compensation for these 2 one-off bridge public holidays, Saturday, January 17, and Saturday, June 27, 2026, would be declared as working Saturdays. Recall that, last year, the Latvian Ministry of Welfare had similarly released a draft list of 2025 public holidays in which the working day status of Friday, May 2, and Monday, November 17, was shifted to nearby Saturdays, as has been the practice for over 15 years, with very few exceptions (2011, 2016, and 2022). The government's decision applies to public administration bodies financed from the state budget and their employees, for whom a five-day working week is established from Monday to Friday. For municipal and private enterprises and organizations, the transfer of working days is advisory. The current Lavian Labor Code stipulates that the Cabinet of Ministers must declare such bridge public holidays before July 1st of the preceding year. Recall that a 2020 survey by the Latvian Ministry of the Economy, showed a support of almost 95 percent for the declaration of bridge holidays, compensated by working Saturdays.

Philippines House Votes 6-Year Barangay Elections Interval Official Gazette of the Republic of the Philippines (Manila) The Philippines House of Representatives has passed on third and final reading House Bill 11287, which proposes to extend the term of Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials from three to six years. The aforementioned bill, which was approved at the committee level, last December, would amend Section 42 of Republic Act No. 7160 to hold the next Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections by the second Monday of May 2029, instead of in October 2026. Note that a conflicting Senate Bill (SB) 2816, had its third and final reading in January, and would set the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections every 4 years apart, most likely on the last Monday of October, as was the case from 2007 to 2013. Normally, the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections should occur every 3 years, and have usually been accompanied by the declaration of a one-off public holiday. However, over the past decade, these elections have often been rescheduled. The 2018 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections were supposed to be held in late 2016, but were twice postponed, once to 2017 and a second time to 2018. Then in September 2019, three panels of the Philippines Senate approved moving the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections from May 2020 to May 2023. Eventually, the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections were held on October 30, 2023.

Western Australia Considering Public Holidays Shake-Up Western Australia Department of Labour Relations and Commerce (Perth) The Premier of the State of Western Australia, Roger Cook, has indicated that WA's public holidays could soon be realigned with those observed on the east coast, potentially as early as next year, and that that review may also introduce an additional public holiday. Mentioned as on the shortlist for date changes are: WA Day, the King's Birthday, and Labour Day. Recall that, last November, Premier Cook, had already indicated that he was open to the idea of moving the Western Australia Day public holiday closer to summer, stating that "I think it makes sense to explore how we might better align the date of the WA Day public holiday, particularly to coincide with our warmer months around summer", and adding that "I am open to reviewing the date of the public holiday in the future, as part of broader reforms that look at maximising any economic benefits". Originally called Foundation Day until 2011, WA Day is observed on the first Monday of winter, and for the past few years, that date has seen heavy rains.
