Trinidad and Tobago Public Holiday October 13 Official

The President of Trinidad and Tobago, Anthony Carmona, has made the appointment of a one-off national non-working public holiday, on Friday, October 13, 2017, in honour of the First Peoples of Trinidad and "in recognition of their contribution to the islands", under section 4(1) of the Public Holidays and Festivals Act.

Last spring (11-May-2017), the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Keith Rowley, had announced that the First Peoples of Trinidad and Tobago would be given a one-off national non-working public holiday, on Friday, October 13, 2017, "in recognition of their contribution to the islands".

For the past 20 years, communities such as the Orisa (10-Jul-2012) and the Carib/First Pepole (15-Oct-2013 and 02-Sep-2007), repeatedly asked for new public holidays dedicated to their community, and finally, last autumn (30-Oct-2016), Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister, Keith Rowley, announced that the First Peoples of Trinidad and Tobago would be given a one-off national non-working public holiday, in 2017.

At that time, although the First Peoples' requests have always involved the declaration of a non-working public holiday in Trinidad and Tobago on October 14, the Chief of Santa Rosa First Peoples Community, Ricardo Bharath-Hernandez, announced that he would prefer a holiday during the week, because a public holiday on a Saturday or Sunday is like a "semi-holiday", thus today's announced date of Friday, October 13, 2017, as a one-off national non-working public holiday in Trinidad and Tobago.

The declaration of Friday, October 13, 2017, as a one-off national non-working public holiday in Trinidad and Tobago, is in addition to, and amends, the official list of Trinidad and Tobago bank holidays and of non-working public holidays in Trinidad and Tobago for the calendar year 2017, as announced earlier this year (29-Dec-2016).
