Background Information

Governing Law: The list and dates of official public holidays in the British Virgin Islands are regulated by the Public Holidays Act, Chapter 199, as amended by The Public Holidays Amendment Act (2000).  Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend are usually moved to the following Monday.  Territory Day: This holiday originated in 1956 when the Federation of the Leeward Islands, created in 1872, was dissolved. Originally designated as “Colony Day”, it began to be termed “Territory Day” in the 1960s when the word “colony” fell into disfavour. The term “Territory Day” was officially substituted for “Colony Day” in the Schedule to the Public Holidays Act in 1978. In 2001, the BVI Public Holidays Review Committee did propose renaming this public holiday as "Virgin Islands Day", but as of June 2009, this change was not implemented.  British Virgin Islands International Codes VG and VGB (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .vg (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of British Virgin Islands information and news: ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (British Virgin Islands maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in British Virgin Islands), and Wikipedia (includes British Virgin Islands commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
