07 Mar 2012 (LETA News Agency-Riga) Latvian Prime Minister, Valdis Dombrovskis, has announced that due to a lack of consensus within Latvia's current ruling coalition parties, further debate on the declaration of a new annual non-working public holiday in Latvia had been "postponed indefinitely".

13 Feb 2009 (Integration and Minority Information Service-Riga) Yesterday, the bill declaring Orthodox and Old Believers' Christmas as public holidays in Latvia was rejected in its third reading in the Saeima (Latvia's Parliament).

Latvia started to officially declare Bridge Holidays in 2007. To make up for these extra public holidays, there are designated specific Working Saturdays.
Weekend Public Holidays: There was a lot of debate in Parliament in May 2006 and January 2007 as to what to do when public holidays fell on a weekend day. But, as of July, 2007, nothing has yet come into effect.
Although there is a sizeable Russian minority in Latvia, none of the Orthodox holidays is a public holiday, although an attempt was made in 2003 to declare Orthodox Christmas as a public holiday in Latvia .
