Background Information

Earthquake Remembrance Day is a public holiday in Turkmenistan so that people can commemorate their relatives, visit a graveyard, and offer prayers in the mosques and churches for the peace of soul of victims of the battlefields and devastating earthquake in Ashgabat in 1948.  Seker Bairam (End of Ramadan): Turkmenistan revived Seker Bairam, also known as Oraza, as national public holiday in 1999.  Melon Day is national holiday observed annually in August, and which was established by a decree of President Saparmurat Niyazov in 1994. Since Niyazov's death in late 2006, this holidays has fallen out of favour.  Turkmen Carpet Day is another one of late President Niyazov's creations and is reported to be widely celebrated in Turkmenistan in late May.  Health Day, traditionally held in November is an occasion for the President and members of his government to climb up the Path of Health scenic route. We have confirmation that this holiday has been retained as of 2007.  Commemorative Days: The full list of commemorative days, following the January 2008 revision, is: • Suw damjasy altyn danesi (a drop of water is a grain of gold) holiday - the first Sunday of April • World health day - April 7 • Turkmen horse holiday - last Sunday of April • Turkmen carpet holiday - last Sunday of May • World children's day - June 1 • World environment day - June 5 • Day of science - June 12 • Galla Bayramy (Day of harvest) - third Sunday of July • Turkmen melon day - second Sunday of August • Day of knowledge and students - September 1 • Day of Ruhnama - September 12 • Day of Turkmen bakhshi - second Sunday of September • World elders day - October 1 • Day of harvest - last Sunday of November • Day of good neighborliness - first Sunday of December • Day of commemoration of the first president of Turkmenistan, Saparmurat Niyazov - December 21.  Turkmenistan International Codes TM and TKM (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .tm (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Turkmenistan information and news: ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Turkmenistan maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Turkmenistan), and Wikipedia (includes Turkmenistan commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
