(Posted on Tuesday, September 1, 2009)

Gambia's President, Yaya Jammeh, and the Gambian Supreme Islamic Council (SIC), have jointly announced that from now on the dates of Muslim public holidays would be calculated in line with the Umm al-Qura calendar used by Saudi Arabia.

In the past, Gambia celebrated Muslim public holidays, such as the Eid el Fitr when they see it or has seen another Muslim who they trust has seen it (04-Dec-2008 and 30-Dec-2007).
