China Deputy Proposes 16-Day CNY Public Holidays

Source: China Daily (Sichuan Province)
Posted: Wednesday, March 9, 2011

A deputy of the Chinese National People's Congress, Li Jing, who is also the mayor of Meishan City in Sichuan Province, is proposing that the current 7-day Chinese/Lunar New Year public holidays be extended to 16 consecutive days.

Although the aforementioned call by a single deputy of the Chinese National People's Congress is hardly an official endorsement, one should remember that China's last major overhaul of it's official list of public holidays (2007-12-17) was preceded by similar trial balloons published in the state-controlled Chinese press (1999-09-20, 2007-07-01, 2007-03-02, and 2007-02-17).
