The Madurai bench of the Madras High court has dismissed a petition aiming to force the Government of India's State of Tamil Nadu to declare October 17 and October 19, 2017, as non-working public holidays to facilitate the celebration of the Deepavali annual public holiday with the upcoming weekend.

The aforementioned requested declaration of October 17 and October 19, 2017, as non-working public holidays in India's State of Tamil Nadu would have been in addition to the list of the days which are be non-working public holidays in India's state of Tamil Nadu for the calendar year 2017, as set out in the "Public (Miscellaneous) Department G.O. Ms. No. 893", released last autumn (15-Nov-2016).
