Philippines Presidential Communications Secretary, Martin Andanar, has announced that President Rodrigo Duterte had declared a one-off non-working public sector holiday and school holiday in the Philippines on Monday, October 16, 2017, on account of the beginning of a nationwide transportation strike on that date.

Secretary Andanar added that the private sector would not be covered by the aforementioned decision to declare a one-off non-working public sector holiday in the Philippines on Monday, October 16, 2017, as suspension of work is subject to the discretion of employers.

Recall that, last month (2017-09-19 and 2017-09-16), President Rodrigo Duterte similarly declared a one-off non-working public sector holiday and school holiday in the Philippines on September 21 the date when mass demonstrations are expected to mark the 45th anniversary of the declaration of martial law through but Proclamation 1081, dated September 21, 1972.

The aforementioned declaration of a one-off non-working public sector holiday and school holiday in the Philippines, on Monday, October 16, 2017, thus further amends the list of official public holidays in the Philippines, released last summer (2016-08-18), when Rodrigo Duterte signed Proclamation No. 50, s. 2016.
