Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Norway are regulated by the Act respecting public holidays and their sanctity (No. 12 of 1995) which lists the ten days of the year which are public holidays, and repeals the similarly-named act of 1965.  Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date, such as the following Monday, for example).  Bank Holidays: in addition to the national public holidays of Norway, banks close the afternoon of Holy Wednesday, all of December 24, and the afternoon of December 31.  Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are not official public holidays, but most shops and offices close at midday.  Week before Easter: many Norwegians take time off between Palm Sunday and Easter Monday.  Sami National Day, not an official public holiday, was set to be celebrated on February 6th, on the occasion of the 15th Sami conference in Helsinki in 1992. The Sami national day is common for all Sami, irrespective of where they live, whether in Sweden, Norway, Finland or Russia. The national day was celebrated for the first time in 1993 .  Norway International Codes NO and NOR (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .no (ICANN national top-level internet domain). Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Norway information and news: Central Bank of Norway (Norway central bank), UnitedHealthcare Global (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Norway maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Norway), and Wikipedia (includes Norway commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).

Note that religious holidays are included only if they are national public holidays, or if the national labour code has specific holiday allowances for employees of specific religions.
