29 Sep 2009 (Szociális és Munkaügyi Miniszter-Budapest) The Labour and Social Affairs Ministry of Hungary (SZMM), has released the official list of bridge, and other one-off, public holidays for the year 2010, along with the list of Saturdays that will be regular working days, in compensation. • 06 Jan 2009 (Szociális és Munkaügyi Minisztérium-Budapest) The government of Hungary has announced a change in the compensation day for the upcoming January 2, 2009, bridge public holiday. The compensation working Saturday will be on March 28, 2009. • 22 Jul 2008 (Magyar Nemzet) The Labour and Social Affairs Ministry of Hungary (Szociális és Munkaügyi Miniszter, aka. Governing Law: Official public holidays in Hungary are regulated by the Act VIII of 1991 on the State Festival of the Republic of Hungary (Magyar Közlöny, 1991-03-14, No 29, pp. 651-652) which sets forth the list of public holidays, from which the dates of March 15, August 20 and October 23 are singled-out as National Holidays, August 20 being made the official national day of Hungary. The law further cancels the public holidays of April 4 and November 7, due to their association with Soviet occupation. • Revolution Day: March 15, marking the outbreak of the 1848/9 revolution and war of independence, from which modern parliamentarianism in Hungary can be dated. • St. Stephen's Day: August 20, the feast of St Stephen of Hungary, founder of the state, declared by Parliament, in 1991, to be the official State National Day. • Republic Day: October 23, anniversary of the outbreak of the 1956 revolution and proclamation of the Republic of Hungary in 1989. • Bridge Public Holidays were introduced in 2007 as per law law 170/2006 (Chapter VII, section 28), to occur on Mondays preceding Tuesday holidays, and to occur on Fridays following Thursday holidays. In order to make up for these extra public holidays, specific Saturdays have been designated as Working Saturdays.
