Governing Law: Official public holidays in Portugal are regulated by the 1976 Decreto-ley núm. 874/76 relativo a las vacaciones, días feriados y ausencias (Diário da República, 1976-12-28), and in articles 208 to 232, 255 and 259 of the New Labour Code of 2003 (Código do Trabalho, Lei n.º 99/2003, de 27.08, com Declaração de Rectificação n.º 15/2003, de 28.10) which makes a distinction between feriados obrigatórios and feriados facultativos. The list of public holidays may not be altered by collective agreement or individual contract of employment (Article 21).
A distinction is made between the twelve mandatory and the two discretionary public holidays: the latter may each be replaced by any other day by agreement between employer and employees.
Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date, such as the following Monday, for example).
Regional Holidays: Towns, cities, and regions may have additional public holidays .
In particular, Saint Anthony's Day is observed in Lisbon only. |
