Cuba Restores Christmas Public Holiday

(Posted on Wednesday, December 2, 1998)

Source: Reuters (La Habana)

Cuba's Politburo has announced that the Cuban Communist Party had asked the State Council to declare Christmas Day (December 25) as an annual public holiday for all citizens (para cristianos y no cristianos, creyentes y no creyentes).

Chistmas was cancelled as a public holiday in Cuba in 1969, not for political of ideological reasons, but rather as part of a drive to raise the country's sugar production to 10 million tons.

The restoration of Christmas Day as a public holiday in Cuba is to be enshrined in the Decreto-Ley número 189 del año 1998.
