Paraguay Maintains Date Of September 29 Public Holiday

The President of Paraguay, Nicanor Duarte Frutos, has issued Decree 3390/04 (Por el cual se dispone que el feriado del 29 de setiembre del corriente año se mantendrá el día recaído) by which he announces that he will not move the upcoming September 29 public holiday from Wednesday to a nearby Monday, as the law permits him to.

Under the terms of law 1723/01 (29-Jun-2001), the President has discretionary powers to move some fixed-date public holidays to a nearby Monday, but the executive has rarely availed itself of that power (29-Apr-2003).

The date of September 29 had been a public holiday since 1995. Law 715/95 declared that September 29 would be a public holiday for a period of 5 years, and it was followed by law 1601/00 which confirmed it as an annual public holiday (28-Sep-2000).
