Malta's General Workers' Union (GWU) has launched an official complaint in front of the ILO (International Labour Organization) claiming that the recent amendments to the National Holidays and Other Public Holidays Act (Chapter 252 of the Laws of Malta) violates Conventions Nos. 87 and 98 of the ILO.
Recall that in early 2005, the law on Malta's public holidays was amended to repeal the so-called day-in-lieu provision, whereby fixed-date public holidays that fall on a weekend give rise to an additional public holiday (15-Jan-2005).
