French high commissioner, Yves Dassonville, has announced that New Caledonia will celebrate June 26th, 2008, as a one-off public holiday to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1988 Matignon Accords.
These agreements signed in Paris in 1988 brought an end to years of instability and tension between anti-independence supporters and pro-independence Kanaks.
