The Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan announced that it had decided to switch working and non-working days, so that the non-working period corresponding to the upcoming Novruz public holidays could extend from March 20 to 28, 2009, inclusively.
Wednesday and Thursday March 25-26 were declared non-working days to compensate the fact the days 2 and 3 of this year's Novruz public holidays fall on a weekend, while Sunday, March 29 was declared a regular working day, so that Friday, March 27 could be declared a non-working public holiday.
This juggling of working and non-working days at the time of the Novruz public holidays is a staple of Azerbaijan's calendar (08-Mar-2008 and 07-Mar-2007) and, when the 2009 official list of public holidays in Azerbaijan was released (14-Dec-2008) we had conjectured that the Novruz public holidays would be extended until the end of the week.
