Addressing participants during a two-day national youth workshop on Monday, the Principal Public Relations Officer of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Mr Osupile Maroba, said the prerogative to declare election day a public holiday lies with the president, adding that there is nothing that the commission can do in that regard if the law is not amended.
Legislative support for the proposed election day public holiday does, however, seem assured, on both sides of the aisle, as calls for this measure have been made by both the opposition and the governing party, since the issue came to the fore 2 years ago (20-Jul-2007, 22-Aug-2008, 27-Nov-2008, and 26-Jan-2009).
