Brazil's Senate commission on education, culture and sport (Comissão de Educação, Cultura e Esporte-CE) has rejected a bill that would have moved some of Brazil's mid-week, fixed-date, public holidays to the adjoining Friday.
Senior senator, Romeu Tuma (PTB-SP), justified the Senate's rejection of the bill based on his opinion that the dates of these public holidays had significance (had not been chosen at random -as datas fixadas para os feriados não são aleatórias).
This bill, introduced in 2003, was approved last month in commission by Brazil's lower house (09-Apr-2009).
