The Chief Minister of India's State of Kerala, V.S. Achuthanandan, has promised a delegation of the Kerala State Tamil Protection Council that the Kerala state government would consider its request to declare a public holiday for Makarapongal.
If this was to go ahead, the January 14, 2010, Makarapongal public holiday would be declared in the Palakkad, Idukki, Thiruvananthapuram, Wayanad and Pathanamthitta districts, which border Tamil Nadu and which have a significant Tamil population.
Makarapongal, and the 2 days that follow it, are part of the official public holidays declared by the Tamil Nadu state government, last fall (19-Oct-2009) for the calendar year 2010.
