Zimbabwe Independence Day Public Holiday's Future More Secure

(Posted on Saturday, April 18, 2009)

Source: VOA News (Harare)

ter years of shunning the April 18, Independence Day, public holiday, Zimbabwe's new Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai, and his MDC Party are now saying that the Independence Day is a national event and the property of no single political party.

The April 18 public holiday, celebrating the birth of Zimbabwe from the former white-dominated Rhodesia on April 18, 1980, was long regarded by most as a ZANU-PF event, not a national holiday.

This recent embracing of the April 18 public holiday by the main opposition party, the MDC, most likely means that the April 18 Independence Day public holiday is safe from tinmkering even after the ZANU-PF eventually loses power.
