The governor of American Samoa, Togiola Tulafono, has announced that he plans to declare Wednesday, September 29, 2010, a one-off public holiday to mark the anniversary of last year's earthquake and ensuing tsunami.

Governor Tulafono added that, for the moment, the upcoming September 29 public holiday is a one-off event, and that he would decide at a later time if September 29th should become a permanent, annual, public holiday in the territory of American Samoa.

Last year's earthquake and tsunami claimed 32 lives in American Samoa.
