China Announces 3 Regional Public Holidays

(Posted on Wednesday, September 29, 2010)

The Government of Guangzhou has announced 3 municipal non-working public holidays on account of the upcoming 16th Asian Games.

These 3 additional non-working public holidays are: the opening day of the Asian Games on Friday, November 12, 2010 (already being considered since last spring 31-May-2010), the day of the closing ceremony on Friday, November 26, 2010, and the final day will be during the Asian Para Games on Monday, December 13, 2010.

To avoid a repeat of last year's regional public holidays' cancellation chaos (31-Mar-2009), the Guangzhou municipality Government also announced that these 3 municipal non-working public holidays had already been approived by China's State Council.

Although generally quite rare in China, and always subject to strict central control (26-Mar-2009), some regional public holidays have been declared in the recent past, such as the 30th anniversary of the creation of the Shenzhen special economic zone (20-Aug-2010), the Shanghai World Expo (02-Apr-2010) and the Beijing Olympics (06-Aug-2008).
