Kenyan President, Mwai Kibaki, has agreed to declare Wednesday, August 4, 2010, the date of the upcoming constitutional referendum, a one-off public holiday "to allow Kenyans to fully take part at the referendum on the draft law".
In addition, Government spokesman, Alfred Mutua, announced that President Kibaki had directed all public servants to be released from their work stations on Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at 3pm local time to enable them travel to participate in the voting exercise, and he also urged employers in the private sector to release their workers in good time.
Earlier this week (28-Jul-2010), the Chairman of Kenya's Interim Independent Electoral Commission, Ahmed Isaack Hassan, had asked President Kibaki to declare Wednesday, August 4, 2010, the date of the upcoming constitutional referendum date, a public holiday.
The draft constitution (21-Nov-2009) would allow for Parliament to make provisions for additional public holidays, through legislation, and would keep three constitutional national holidays, namely; Madaraka Day (June 1), Mashujaa Day (currently called Kenyatta Day) on October 20, and Jamhuri Day (December 12).

Kenya Declares August 4 Public Holiday
