The parliament of Slovakia has approved an amendment to the law on state holidays which adds two new annual memorial holidays, starting in 2011.
August 10 will be commemorated as the Day of Mining Disaster Victims, and May 1 will be commemorated as the Day of Slovak Accession to the EU. Memorial days in Slovakia do not constitute public holidays, but May 1 is already a non-working public holiday.
