Suriname's President, Desi Bouterse, has announced that the upcoming Diwali, on Friday, November 5, 2010, would be an official public holiday in Suriname.
Contrary to the October 20th, 2008, public holiday which commemorated the 155th anniversary of Chinese immigration to Suriname (19-Sep-2008) and which was not repeated in following years (02-Jan-2010 and 20-Nov-2008), we expect this new public holiday to remain in the coming years as has been the case for the, August 9, International Day of Indigenous People, declared as a national public holiday in the summer of 2007 (08-Aug-2007).
No mention was made, however, of the recent promise of a new annual public holiday for Maroons Day (11-Oct-2010).
