  • Yakutia Declares June 23 Day In Lieu Public Holiday
    ITAR-TASS (Moscow)

Ministry of Labor of the Russian Republic of Yakutia has announced the declaration of Monday, June 23, 2025, as a day in lieu public holiday due to Ysyakh, Yakutia's national day falling on Saturday, June 21, 2025.

Recall that, last February, following the introduction in the State Duma (the lower house of the Federal Assembly of Russia) of legislation calling for the declaration of 2 additional annual Easter-related public holidays, the Ministry of Labor of Russia clarified to the media that "Within the framework of the delimitation of powers, regional government bodies have the right to independently declare additional non-working (holiday) days in the constituent entity of the Russian Federation".

That announcement went on to add that "the authorities of the subjects of the Russian Federation can also declare religious holidays non-working days".

Earlier that month, the first deputy chairman of the Duma committee on control, Dmitriy Gusev, had announced a bill to declare Easter and Trinity as new annual public holidays in Russia. As a consequence of that bill, since Easter and Trinity both fall on Sundays, the following Mondays would be observed as public holidays.

Recall that, last weekend, Bolivia's Vice Minister of Tourism, Hiver Flores, had sent a proposal to the Bolivian Ministry of Labor to move the upcoming Aymara New Year (Andean, Amazonian and Chaco New Year) public holiday, which this year falls on Saturday, June 21, to Friday, June 20, 2025, to provide a long holiday which would benefit internal tourism.

  • Jordan Declares June 26 Public Holiday For Islamic New Year 1447
    Jordan News Agency Petra (Amman)

Jordanian Prime Minister, Jafar Hassan, has announced that the upcoming Islamic New Year public holiday in Jordan would be observed on Thursday, June 26, 2026, and that this suspension of work would apply to all ministries, official agencies, institutions, public universities, municipalities, joint service councils and entities fully owned by the government.

As usual, the above may seem to indicate that the announcement does not apply to the private sector. However, recall that, back in October 2020, the then spokesperson for the Jordanian Ministry of Labour, Mohammad al-Zyoud, had clarified that "all official and religious holidays in Jordan include both public and private sectors" adding that "According to article 59 of the Labour Law, which clarifies the mechanism for making the employer work on his weekly, religious or public holidays, official communications issued for this purpose include private sector institutions without mentioning them in the communications.".

This clarification was reiterated by the Jordanian Ministry of Labour many times, since then, most recently in late May and early June 2024.

  • Singapore 2026 Public Holidays Released
    Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM)

Singapore's Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has released the official list of non-working Singapore public holidays and bank holidays in Singapore for the upcoming calendar year 2026.

The aforementioned list of 2026 public holidays in Singapore, was released somewhat later than in the past, but not as late as last year when the 2025 list of Singapore public holidays was not released until the beginning of August 2024.

The 2026 list continues the trend of unreliable dates for the 2 Muslim public holidays of Singapore, ever since the October 2021 MUIS (Majilis Ugama Islam Singapura) communique stating that Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore had "agreed to adopt revised criteria of the astronomical calculation for the determination of the Islamic calendar from year 2022 onwards.".

Until 2022, the annual announcement of the annual official Islamic Calendar to be used in Singapore was usually a perfunctory affair, most often coming much later than the announcement by Singapore's MOM of the list of the public holidays for the same calendar year, and confirming the dates of the 2 Muslim public holidays announced by MOM, despite the initial list of public holidays announced by MOM always contains the mention "Subject to change".

But, as mentioned above, this orderliness has not been the norm in more recent years.

The date of the 2021 Hari Raya Haji (Feast of Sacrifice) was different in the MUIS listing, released in October 2020, as compared to the previous April's MOM list of 2021 public holidays.

And, in October 2021, MOM released an amended list of 2022 Singapore public holidays, following the decision by MUIS to move the 2 Muslim public holidays of 2022.

For 2026, the announced date of the Hari Raya Puasa is off by a day as compared to the lunar crescent visibility criteria announced in 2021 (namely that the new Moon crescent is expected to be visible if, at the time of the sunset that follows a new Moon, the Moon has a minimum altitude of 3 degrees and an elongation of 6.4 degrees).

On the other hand, the date of the 2026 Deepavali public holiday, which in past years was often incorrectly announced (off by a month in 2009), is correct in today's announced list of 2026 public holidays in Singapore.

Article 2 of Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2024 states that "with the exception of Eid holidays, any of the official holidays mentioned in article No.1 may be carried over by a Cabinet decision to the beginning or end of the week" which, in the past, has meant that the public holiday for Islamic New Year and/or the Prophet's Birthday may be moved to adjoin the nearest weekend (Saturday-Sunday in the UAE, since 2022).

We also expect the upcoming Prophet's Birthday public holiday to be moved to September 5, 2025.

Bolivia's Vice Minister of Tourism, Hiver Flores, has announced that he had sent a proposal to the Bolivian Ministry of Labor to move the upcoming Aymara New Year (Andean, Amazonian and Chaco New Year) public holiday, which this year falls on Saturday, June 21, to Friday, June 20, 2025, to provide a long holiday which would benefit internal tourism.

In 2007, a bill to create a new annual public holiday, on June 21, to mark the Indigenous People's New Year, had been introduced in the Bolivian legislative assembly, but it lapsed in committee.

Then, in 2009, Bolivia's Minister of Culture, Pablo Groux, announced that the cabinet of the Government of Bolivia had passed Decreto Supremo Nº 173 declaring that the Indigenous New Year, on June 21, would henceforth be an annual public holiday in Bolivia.

Decree 173 specified that the date of this new public holiday would be immovable, even when June 21 occurs on a Saturday or Sunday (as is the case this year).

Recall that, originally, many eastern provinces refused to observe the Aymara New Year arguing that this was a holiday limited to the Andean region from which the then President, Evo Morales, hailed.

  • Taiwan 2026 Public Holidays Released
    Taiwan Central Personnel Administration (Taipei)

The General Administration of Personnel and Administration of Taiwan's Executive Yuan has released its official annual calendar of official non-working public holidays in Taiwan for the upcoming calendar year 2026, in accordance with the "Implementation Measures for Memorial Days and Holidays" regulations (紀念日及節日實施辦法).

The aforementioned announcement follows last month's presidential decree promulgating the Implementation Act of Commemorative and Festival Days (紀念日及節日實施條例) legislation.

But, additionally, the General Personnel Office also revised the Points for Government Agencies to Handle Compensatory Holidays and Adjustment of Holidays in Response to Memorial Days and Holidays (政府機關配合紀念日與節日補假及調整放假處理要點), explicitly deleting the provision of "adjusting working days to holidays and making up for work" (調整上班日為放假日並補行上班), and instead only retaining compensatory holidays.

Recall that regulations adopted in March 2013, compel the Directorate General of Personnel Administration to make public the national holiday calendar for following year before June 1st of the previous year, though the 2023 public holidays were announced a week or so late, as has been the case for the past 3 years.
