Paraguay's lower house of parliament (Cámara de Diputados) has approved a bill that would declare February 3 and May 14 as two new annual public holidays.
The aforementioned bill (21-Dec-2010) would restore the February 3, San Blas (patron saint of Paraguay) public holiday, as had been often requested (19-Jan-2009 and 04-Feb-2006), since since the San Blas public holiday was dropped from the list of official public holidays in Paraguay in 1995.
It would also declare May 14 as an annual public holiday, considering that May 14 is the true historical date of the Independence of Paraguay.
The bill must now make its way through reconciliation in the Senate and be signed by the President. Therefore, February 3 will not be a public holiday in Paraguay in 2011.
Note that another bill making its way through the Senate (12-Jan-2011) would move the annual public holiday from May 15 to May 14 (and not create a new public holiday). It would also move the annual Mother's Day celebration (not a public holiday) from its annual fixed date of May 15 to the 3rd or 4th Sunday of May, to avoid this family celebration interfering with the May 15 (or 14) patriotic public holiday.
