Chile's lower house of Parliament (Cámara de Diputados) has approved a bill which would add a fifth "irrenunciable" non-working public holiday to be observed on the last Sunday of July to commemorate family day (Día de las Familias).
Although the declaration of a non-working public holiday to always fall on a Sunday might seem odd, it must be remembered that one of the main issues relating to public holidays in Chile is whether large shopping centers (callled "Malls" by Chileans) are allowed to open on these days, leading small shop owners to complain that this is unfair competition (14-Sep-2011, 28-Dec-2006, and 10-Sep-2004).
As such one of the salient points of the aformentioned public holiday would be to make the public holiday compulsory (irrenunciable para el comercio) forcing all shops to close on that day.
