Peru 2012 Public Holidays Clarified

Following last month's executive order (Decreto Supremo No. 099-2011-PCM) declaring 8 additional public sector holidays in Peru for the calendar year 2012, the government of Peru has issued a clarification as to the significance of the February 13-14, 2010, public holiday in Peru.

The aforementioned decree, issued last month (29-Dec-2011) by the Presidencia del Consejo de Ministros, declared 8 additional public sector holidays in Peru for the calendar year 2012.

In particular, February 13 and 14, 2012, were declared one-off public holidays leading the world's online press to proclaim that Peru had declared a public holiday for Valentine's Day.

Feeling a bit embarrassed at the way the decree was heralded by the online press, the Peruvian Minister of Tourism and Foreign Trade, José Luis Silva Martinot, went on record specifying that the February 13 and 14, 2012, public holidays were to commemorate Carnival, not Valentine's Day ("El objetivo de los festivos decretados para febrero de este año es rescatar las celebraciones de los carnavales, que es una tradición peruana, y no del Día de San Valentín"). The fact that the 2012 dates for Carnival are one week later was not explained by Minister Silva Martinot.
