Confusing reports have appeared in the Middle East press that the upcoming National Sports Day public holiday declared last month would in fact be be observed on Saturday, February 18, 2012, rather than Tuesday, February 14, 2012.
According to a story which appeared in today's edition of the Gulf Times, the Qatari Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari, is quoted as saying that "Qatar will make February 18 every year the National Day of Sports" and that "HH the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani has approved the date as the National Day of Sports in Qatar".
However, recall that last month (07-Dec-2011), Qatar's Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, has issued the Emiri Decision No.80 of 2011 which declares the second Tuesday of February, every year beginning in 2012, as National Sports Day which will be an official paid holiday, in accordance with the Qatari Labour Law No.14 of 2004, which took effect on January 6, 2005, and as amended by the Law No.8 of 2009 (03-Sep-2009).
Questioned on the above report by the Gulf Times, the President of the Qatari Public Works Authority (Ashghal), Nasser Ali al Mawlawi, stated that the Ashghal sports coordination committee was still working based on the Emiri Decree No 80 of 2011 specifying that the upcoming National Sports Day would be observed on Tuesday, February 14, 2012.
