The Governor of Montserrat, Andrew Pearce, following a Cabinet decision, has signed a proclamation declaring Wednesday, July 21, 2021, to be observed as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.

This one-off public holiday, is similar to the one declared a year ago (2020-07-01), and is to mark the fact that Sunday, July 18, 2021, will mark 26 years since the Soufriere Hills Volcano became active and rendered two-thirds of the island uninhabitable.

The aforementioned proclamation of Wednesday, July 21, 2021, as a public holiday in Montserrat, departs from the consolidated version of the "Public Holidays Act, Revised Edition, showing the law as at 1 January 2002, CHAPTER 6.09" which consolidated the amendments of 1956, 1959, 1971, and 1999 (1999-12-10) into the initial Act 19 of 1954, S.R.O. 15/1956, as later amended by the "Montserrat Public Holidays (Amendment) Act, 2017 No. 3 of 2017" (2017-05-24).
