The Permanent Secretary of the Nigerian Ministry of the Interior, M. L. Shuaib Belgore, on behalf of the Minister of the Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has issued a statement that the Federal Government of Nigeria had declared Sunday and Monday, June 12-13, 2022, as non-working public holidays throughout Nigeria, on account of Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

Until 2019, June 12 had often been declared ad hoc by many Nigerian states as a regional state public holiday (2017-06-09, 2014-06-10, 2013-06-09, 2012-11-25, 2012-06-09, 2011-06-10, 2010-07-06, 2010-06-11, 2009-06-15, 2009-06-11, 2008-06-11, 2006-06-10).

But, a few years ago (2018-06-06), President Buhari announced that, effective from 2019, Nigerian Democracy Day would be marked every June 12, instead of May 29 which had been declared as a non-working public holiday in Nigeria in preceding years (2018-05-25, 2017-05-18, 2016-05-25, 2015-05-25, 2014-05-22, 2013-05-24, 2012-04-27, and 2011-05-24).
