Bangladesh Approves Official 2010 Public Holidays List

The press secretary to Bangladesh's prime minister, Abul Kalam Azad, has announced that the cabinet had approved the 2010 list of official public holidays in Bangladesh.

The released list of official 2010 public holidays contains 14 general holidays and 8 holidays decreed by executive order.

It would seem, however, that the initial press release contains an error as the media have reported that the dates of the 2010 "National Mourning Day" public holiday, and the Janmashtami public holiday, both fall on the same date, which is totally impossible (it would appear that the 2009 date for Janmashtami was re-used by mistake).

Of note, is the reinstatement of the March 17, birthday of "Bangabandhu" Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, public holiday, which had been canceled eight years ago (24-Dec-2001). The August 15th public holiday, also canceled in 2001, was officially reinstated last year (10-Aug-2008).

The Awami League victory in the recent elections (19-Dec-2008), was probably the final impetus to the reinstatement of this second public holiday.
