Bahrain's Shura Council has backed an amendment to the new "Private Sector Employment Law", currently being debated by parliament, that would align the annual holidays and public holidays of the private sector on those of the public sector.
Under the proposed bill, private sector employees' public holidays would henceforth be determined by the Cabinet, after a recommendation by Labour Minister Dr Majeed Al Alawi, and consultations with the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions.
A similar move to align the public holidays of the private and public sectors has also been under way in Kuwait for the last year (25-Dec-2009).
