South Africa Could Consider January 8 Public Holiday

The Eastern Cape secretary to South Africa's ruling ANC party, Oscar Mabunyane, has confirmed that the issue of declaring a January 8, ANC birthday public holiday, would be raised during the party's national general council meeting in September.

The Cape Times recalls that the issue of declaring a January 8, ANC birthday public holiday, was first up for debate during the early 1990s when the transition to a democratic government was discussed. At that time, the ANC's demand was dropped to allow for the celebration of other public holidays like Human Rights Day. But that the issue is coming back to the fore, in the run-up to the ANC's centenary celebration in 2012.

However, resistance from the business community is likely to be stiff. Babu Baijoo, the president of the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and a longtime member of the ANC, is quoted as saying that South Africa could not afford another public holiday.
