Swaziland Traditional Public Holidays Uproar

(Posted on Monday, January 11, 2010)

Source: The Times of Swaziland (Mbabane)

Over the past weekend, Swaziland's Minister of Home Affairs, Chief Mgwagwa Gamedze, and his Principal Secretary, Mduduzi Magongo, have lashed-out at diary publishers that have already published 2010 diaries showing the dates for the Umhlanga and Incwala public holidays.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has since warned companies against publicising public holidays such as the Umhlanga and Incwala public holidays in their annual calendars without getting clearance from the Ministry.

The Times of Swaziland reports that, at least 2 major companies had done so for 2010; the African Alliance and the Swaziland Post and Telecommunications (SPTC).

Apparently, the Minister of Home Affairs stands by his recent statement (02-Jan-2010), made when asked about the impact on business of declaring a public holiday 2 days beforehand: "In today’s technology we have the fax, telephone, cellphones, etc thus it is easier to communicate with everyone" and "all have to close down whatever happens as it has to be respected".
