The executive director of the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ), Reverend Pukuta Mwanza, has recommended to the parliamentary committee on legal affairs, governance, human rights and gender matters, that Election Day should be declared a public holiday in election years to maximise voter turnout.
Although election day is not currently an automatic public holiday in Zambia, the government of Zambia did declare a one-off public holiday on Thursday, October 30, 2008 (23-Oct-2008), on the occasion of the presidential election to replace former President Levy Mwanawasa, who had recently died (26-Aug-2008).
Reverend Mwanza also called for the date of general elections to be determined by the Constitution, meaning that they would be predictable years in advance.
